Akira Press was founded in 1983 by the Poet
Desmond Faada Johnson. The company was one of the first pioneering publishers that
published black writers in the UK. Working with new writers in the early
1980s was an economically risky business. However the risk was minimised by
the excellent support the company got from writers, the community and arts
community, especially Greater London Arts. Akira Press published poetry, children books, plays, fiction and
non-fiction books.
It was very difficult in those days to sell books written by black writers in
mainstream bookshops and libraries. So the company devised a road show, that
was organized around poetry readings, writers residencies, book launches and
community events, all around the UK and introduced the writers directly to the
communities.
Gradually, mainstream bookshops, book distributors and Libraries started to
stock the books and the rest is history. Many of the writers that Akira Press
published has gone on to become major writers and have influenced a new
generation of writers that have made massive progress, in fiction, non-fiction
and children writing.
Akira Press is back! with new innovative writing and a huge list of new
writers to launch on the world.
